The tree adjacent at the corner of the old Longfellow School at Broadway & Fayette has several dead sections that need to be pruned.

The paperbark maple in the Lee Street park (Reginald Wilder Playground) could use some pruning of several clearly dead branches. The photo is from earlier this year and much of the tree is quite healthy. I will likely do some pruning of the tree myself but I thought it best to let the Forestry people give it their best shot first.

The plaque honoring Peter Valentine that's located below the Photo Mural in Modica Way (a.k.a. Graffiti Alley) in Central Square has been painted over with spray paint. Please clean the paint off the plaque and, if possible, treat it in such a way that paint is less likely to adhere to the surface in the future. It would be much appreciated if keep this plaque could be kept free of graffiti routinely whenever City crews or the crew of the Central Square Business Improvement District does maintenance on the photo mural.

There must have been a power outage or something else that disrupted the timer. The very bright lights in the playground/courtyard are now on all night long. They should really go off no later than perhaps 11pm (you be the judge). [This is the "old" Longfellow school building on Broadway.]

The control box situated in front of CCTV has rusted out to the point that it is no longer in its intended position. This control box is not exceptional in Central Square. There are others that have rusted out. Some have been eliminated, and others simply had the rusted painted over. Considering how control mechanisms have become MUCH smaller these days, perhaps we should also be considering better solutions than these “tombstone” style sidewalk obstructions.

There are hypodermic needles disposed of in "Save That Stuff" containers in the alley adjacent to the Needle Supply Depot, a.k.a. Needle Exchange on Green Street. This is a hazard to employees of Save That Stuff and others.

There are 7 hypodermic needles in plain view near Central Square T entrance among the recycling and trash bins.

There are two relatively new sidewalk benches that must have been destroyed by snow moving equipment with the recent snow storm. They are on Mass. Ave. around the Market Central (Mass & Main) building.

There is a significant presence of hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia on the Pleasant Street side of the Central Square Post Office. These are pretty clearly associated with the vagrants who often congregate there.

There is also a STRONG stench of urine from this location all the way to the Needle Distribution Center in Michael Simon's building on Green Street.

It is my understanding that representatives of the Central Square Business Improvement District (CSBID) have tried to get our local Postmaster to do something about this problem - to no avail. They claim they have "three federal maintenance contracts" yet there is no evidence at all that any actual maintenance is taking place.

PLEASE have somebody from the City government intervene to address this problem.

There is a major rat infestation on the Pleasant Street side of the Central Square Post Office. Their network of burrows can be clearly seen from the sidewalk, and yesterday afternoon I saw three large rats there in the middle of the day feasting on the garbage left there by the vagrants who often congregate there and running in and out of their burrows.

They claim they have "three federal maintenance contracts" yet there is no evidence at all that any actual maintenance is taking place.

PLEASE have somebody from the City government intervene to address this problem. While you're at it, perhaps you can also ask the Postmaster to clean up the drug paraphernalia that is scattered throughout that area.

On Saturday, October 2, I found at least three intact hypodermic needles around the "Needle Exchange" in Michael Simon's building at 359 Green Street and the adjacent municipal parking lot. This problem is only getting worse. I heard there was a bicycle stolen at gunpoint at this same location earlier in the day.

I understand that the Cambridge City Council has consistently chosen to ignore this persistent problem, but I hope some of our City agencies can do something out it. The staff at the "Needle Exchange" are the biggest problem of all.

The park at Lee Street and West Street (Wilder Playground) has apparently become a public toilet. It would be much appreciated if it could be cleaned up. The photo is in the shady area near but not in the enclosed playground area.

The "Needle Exchange" on Green Street apparently has become simply a hypodermic needle distribution center with little effort to actually exchange needles. The drug addicts are shooting up around the building and leaving their needles alongside the building and elsewhere in the neighborhood. This has gone well beyond being a mere nuisance and is now a public health hazard. If the tenant refuses to keep the area of the building clean and needle-free, then the property owner - Michael Simon - should be cited for neglecting the property that he owns. In addition to the many needles around the property, one of the entryways has become a urine-soaked horror show.

I want to emphasize first that this was NOT a missed trash pickup, but there was no category for what this actually is. The chronic violators at 368 Broadway did a move in/move out after the weekly rubbish collection had taken place and filled the entire front half of the sidewalk. They also discarded a whole coach in front of my house at 366 Broadway.

Please cite the absentee landlord for this with a stiff fine, and please find a way to get this trash dump removed - especially the heavy rain-soaked coach that was dumped in front of my house.

If no citation and fine is given, I will contact the City Manager for an explanation.

The water fill station/water fountain in Jill Brown-Rhone Park in Lafayette Square is not functioning.
  • 46 Lee Street Cambridge, MA, 02139, USA - Mid-Cambridge
Participatory Budgeting brought us a number of water fountain/refill stations in various parks and other locations. I understand why these might have been turned off during the height of the pandemic, but why are they not functioning now - in the midst of a heat wave in June? In my immediate neighborhood this includes Lee Street Park (Wilder Playground) and the new one in front of the old Longfellow School building.
