Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. City Council has approved the contract for the HSIP Upgrades to Improve Pedestrian Safety at four intersections. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer. The improvements at Otis and Park include refreshed crosswalks, bulbouts, advanced stop bars, and improved signal timings. These improvements should help to increase pedestrian safety by increasing visibility and reducing crossing distances.
Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Staff will retain your report and refer to it the next time we undertake a project on this street, whether it is pavement resurfacing or a corridor update. For selection of new safety improvement projects, the City refers to High Injury Corridors, equity indicators, Active Transportation Plan projects, and street resurfacing needs, augmented by Street Safety Concerns.
